Helfer was born in rural Donalda, Alberta, Canada, to Dennis Helfer and Elaine Helfer. The couple is of German and English descendance. She went to the William E. Hay Composite High School which is located within Stettler (Alberta). She lived and worked at the farm of her family along with her three sisters, Trena, Tammy and Tara. Helfer was spotted at 17 by a scout for a modeling agency when she was waiting in line at the movie theater.
